I recently attended the KVCCB meeting where AGL attended to give an update on the proposed AGL Battery site on Bendeela Road Kangaroo Valley. I took at few notes at the meeting you may like to read and you can also view the slide presentation via the KVCCB minutes link here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HMVZGleAattKfu7UlXFU-ANHpqkgYrBN/view – we have also included a short overview below
KV AGL BATTERY PROJECT
Big grid battery (up to 400 MW / 1,600 MWh) proposed on private land near the KV power station, on ~15 ha, using containerised lithium-ion batteries.
Still in early planning: doing environmental, fire, noise, traffic and ecology studies → big EIS → public exhibition (likely from 2026).
Ecology surveys have found threatened species; project also needs federal assessment.
Fire safety relies on container design, spacing, monitoring and an asset protection zone, plus water tanks and an RFS-approved emergency plan, but details (especially for bushfire scenarios) are not final yet.
Connection to the grid is not fully resolved; they’re still negotiating with Transgrid on where/how they plug in.
They say visual and noise impacts will be managed with screening and design, and water/runoff will be managed to protect the catchment.
Community benefits on the table: ~$240k/year for 20 years for local projects, possible EV chargers in town, and a discounted power offer for residents.
Main unresolved concerns from locals: bushfire + battery fire risk in a hard-to-evacuate valley, lack of clear detail on emergency scenarios, shifting story about connection and access routes, and uncertainty about property values and environmental impact.
Cheers–
